Not Afraid

For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.

2 TIMOTHY 1:7 NIV

Are you afraid of the boogeyman? No? Of course not. You’re much too mature for that.

But even when we outgrow our fear of the boogeyman, there are always things that frighten us. No matter how old we get or how brave we become, scary things happen in life.

Those things are different for each of us. Some are afraid to speak in front of a crowd. Others get nervous every time they take a test. Still others fear some terrible disease, like cancer. All of those can be terrifying.

But God says we don’t have to be afraid! When those fearful emotions rise up, we can remind ourselves that God is bigger than any problem we face. He is with us, and His spirit lives in us. His spirit is powerful. It’s loving. And it holds command over our timid, frightened feelings. God’s power in us is greater than any issues we encounter.

Oh, that doesn’t mean all our troubles will work out the way we want them to. But we can take on anything with our heads held high, with no cowering, no trembling, and no knots in our stomachs. We can confront any situation with the power of God. We have His Spirit living in us.
